Insurance and taxes take a back seat this session

One year after Gov. Charlie Crist swept into office vowing to drop the hammer on insurance and property-tax rates, the slogans and pomp are gone. The jovial mood has soured.

There are no rocks to drop or banners hanging in the Capitol's rotunda proclaiming " Florida's Largest Tax Cut."

Lawmakers return Tuesday for an election-year session in the midst of an economic downturn -- and with some anxiety that they'll be held accountable by voters for their promises to tackle insurance and property-tax woes.

"Last year, the promises made were close to pledging immediate gratification," said state Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Lakeland, a critic of last year's decision for the state to take on more insurance risk. "A lot of people are going to be concerned about their elections because we haven't come up with the answers we promised."
